Classical stochasticity and quantum uncertainty in a simple quantum spin model

Abstract

We investigate the dynamics of one anisotropic spin in an external time-dependent magnetic field. Results on this model, which is classically chaotic, are presented for a quantum spin, in particular for S≫1. Quantum unpredictability dominates in regular regions of phase space; in irregular regions of phase space we find classical stochasticity governed by a S-dependent Lyapunov exponent as long as t<T0, where T0 ∼ log S.
